The Katonah Museum of Art is a non-collecting institution geared towards visual arts, located in Katonah, New York. The Museum presents changing exhibitions that cross a spectrum of artistic disciplines, cultures, and historical periods. Housed in an elegant building designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes, and accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the Katonah Museum of Art originates three to four major exhibitions annually.

There Is A Body: Legacy of the Ancestral Arts in the 21st Century

In his 1925 essay “The Legacy of the Ancestral Arts,” philosopher and art critic Alain Locke proposed what was then a radical idea: that the arts of African civilizations were worthy of the same regard as the arts of classical antiquity, and that recognition of their aesthetic value should be independent of their influence on European modernism. He also encouraged Black artists to look to these “ancestral arts” for inspiration.
This exhibit focuses on an intergenerational group of four contemporary artists—David O. Alekhuogie, Sanford Biggers, Lyle Ashton Harris, and Matthew Angelo Harrison— who are forging personal connections to African art and interrogating its appropriation by the Western cannon. The title of the exhibition, There Is A Body: Legacy of the Ancestral Arts in the 21st Century is a play on the historical treatment of African art within the history of the art.
The Haas Brothers: Jungle Fool
March 12, 2023 - June 23, 2024
Jungle Fool, a 7-foot-tall sculpture, exhibits otherworldly, anthropomorphic features which, despite being fiendishly freaky, feel welcoming and blissfully unconnected to the harder, earthier problems we mortals all experience. It represents self-expression and individuality and speaks to more significant social issues such as race, gender, and women's rights, with the undercurrents of humor, compassion, and true humanity. Humorously animalistic, with a comical nod to sexuality, it creates opportunities for people to think differently about the world and its future.

LUNCH: 12:30 PM Please bring a snack/lunch to have if you get hungry. There are no food options at the Museum. If the weather is okay we can meet and have lunch in the sculpture garden. This is the museum’s preference. If it is raining they will allow us to meet and eat in the Learning Center. There are tables and chairs in both locations
SHOW and TELL: Following lunch we will share our drawings and tell stories. This is the social part of our day and is not to be missed.
NOTES: - Admission: Seniors $6, others $12.
- Reciprocal Admission: Fairfield Westchester Museum Alliance (FWMA), North American Reciprocal Museum Association (NARM), American Alliance of Museums (AAM) Members. Also check check your local Library Pass Program.
- Food, drink, chewing gum and tobacco products are not allowed in the galleries.
- PENCIL ONLY in the galleries, and we have to be sitting down when we draw, not walking or standing with pencils out. We can use watercolor and non messy materials in the Learning Center and outside.
- The museum has stools and we should use them.
